Bong-su (Kim Seung-ho) is an innocent farmer who works tirelessly but remains poor. He even delays his daughter Sun-i's wedding. His son, Young-ho (Kim Jin-gyu), returns from military service and is in love with Ok-gyeong (Choi Eun-hee), who was raised by Bong-su and now works at a bar owned by Eok-jo's wife (Hwang Jeong-sun). Struggling with poverty, Bong-su is persuaded by Eok-jo, a loan shark, to sell his cattle and start a secondhand goods business. However, he is swindled out of his money by a con artist (Noh Gyeong-hee) and their gang in Seoul. One night, Bong-su finds some money that Eok-jo drops while attempting to rape Ok-gyeong. During a struggle with Eok-jo, Bong-su accidentally kills him. Ok-gyeong takes the money and gives some to Young-ho. They plan to flee to Seoul, but the police, investigating Eok-jo's murder, arrest them. Believing they are the culprits, the police take them into custody and transport them by train to the station. Bong-su runs after the departing train, confessing that he is the true murderer and should be the one arrested.
