During the Pacific War, Aroun (Kim Un-ha) was a young Korean man forced to fight on the southern front. Life in the Japanese army was one of abuse and perversion under the guise of militarism. The persecution of Aroun, who was Korean, was particularly severe, with the Japanese even ordering him to lick the dirty soles of their boots in front of his nose. Always persecuted for his introverted and intransigent nature, Aroun is comforted by his only two best friends, Inoue and the Japanese maiden Gong Midori. Despite her parents' strong opposition, the Japanese maiden finally convinces her mother to marry Aroun. Even after returning home, Aroun faces a harsh military life. One day, American bombers launch a major air raid. Amidst the smoke and fire, the reality of the militarized regime that oppressed him is shattered, and only Aroun survives as an immortal bird amidst the corpses.
